bloomsday is a celebration that takes place all over the world to "rejoyce" in the sheer wonder that is ulysses. james joyce wrote ulysses to take place on june 16th 1904, the first date he had with nora barnacle, his wife to be. the book is in a league of it's own namely because joyce wrote it using a technique called "stream of consciousness", which writers such as kerouc eventually picked up on.
i read ulysses (maybe my greatest accomplishment) in 2004 coinciding with the centennial celebration. i even named my cat after joyce's daughter lucia, who once dated samuel beckett.
if you are reading this, and are curious, there are events in phillie, n.y.c. spokane, s.f., and many more cities across our fine nation.
